While scrolling through the CompleteRunning blog today, I came across a rather interesting initiative. Sustrans, a charity dedicated to sustainable transportation, is sponsoring a “Change Your World” campaign. This campaigns revolves around the idea that for one week, as many people as possible will take one less car trip than they normally do.
Taking an extra 10 minutes to walk to the store rather than driving. Carpooling to work. Ditching a car in favor of a bike when going to the mall. There are a plethora of easy options when it comes to getting from A to B without the use of a motorized vehicle.
Not only is this initiative good for your planet and your pocketbook (have you seen gas prices lately?!), but it is good for your health. We tend to live in a sedentary culture. We sit in the driver’s seat on the way to work, where we sit in a desk all day, only to come home and sit on the couch as we unwind while watching last night’s episode of “The Biggest Loser.” We could all use being a bit more active in our daily lives.
So, from June 30th to July 5th this year (or even before then if you’re feeling ambitious) vow to “Change Your World” by walking rather than driving. Who knows, this might even end up being a change you like.
